In 1959, the firm relocated from uptown into its own building on East Independence Boulevard, a main thoroughfare developed by Pease engineers. As Charlotte expanded, so did the firm into several new markets, leading the healthcare industry with Cabarrus Memorial (52+ commissions), Grace and Moses Cone hospitals, followed by over 60 additional facilities throughout North Carolina.
The planning and design of Lance’s new manufacturing facility led to a strong foothold in the industrial market. From innovations in peanut butter cracker manufacturing to the installation of a potato chip plant and the opening of a Texas facility—this relationship continued for more than three decades.
Civil Engineering reached out to municipalities across the state, though some of the most significant projects were close to home with the City of Charlotte. Projects included the Hoskins Filter Plant and Irwin and Sugar Creek wastewater treatment plants. The firm's history went on to include all five Charlotte wastewater treatment plants and two water treatment plants.
Major commercial projects in Charlotte were underway for Esso, Exxon, Jefferson Standard Life, WBT and WSOC, while the development of Queens University bolstered the firm’s presence in the education market.
