Long Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

City of Gastonia

The 201 Facilities Plan evaluated eight alternatives to upgrading the City of Gastonia’s wastewater system. The selected alternative involved total capital expenditures of over $148 million spread out over three development phases.

Along with expanding the Long Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant from 8.0 MGD to 16.0 MGD, other major collection system improvements completed Phase I, which totaled approximately $49 million. The project was financed by Revenue Bonds, Federal and State Revolving Loans and Utility Funds.

The design included tertiary filtration, new final clarifiers, chlorination and dechlorination, biological nutrient removal, new dissolved air thickener and emergency power generating system. Preliminary treatment upgrades included a new influent pump station, and screening and grit removal systems. The upgrade included phosphorous removal to 0.5 mg/l, nitrogen limits below 4.0 mg/l, BOD of 5 mg/l and TSS of 15 mg/l.
