Regional Utility Plants

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Two new regional utility plants provide heating, cooling and telecommunications service to support current and future growth on campus at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The 2-story, 11,250 SF RUP No. 1 serves the Science Quad. The first floor contains a 400-ton and 800-ton chiller, which tie into three existing chillers in the adjacent Barnhardt Student Activities Center. RUP No.1 also includes space for one future 500-ton chiller and three cooling towers. The second floor contains a 100-BHP and two 450-BHP boilers with upgrade capability for larger boilers. Underground piping carries re-circulating chilled/hot water to the HVAC systems of each building on the Quad. RUP No.1 serves 753,000 SF of existing and new university floor area.

Pease served as architectural and structural design consultant to United Engineering Group, Inc. for RUP No.2, which serves 750,000 SF on the Charlotte Research Institute Campus. The 2-story, 11,420 SF RUP No.2 will receive an additional 5,475 SF during Phase 2 of construction. RUP No. 2 includes boilers, chillers and pumps in a similar configuration as RUP No. 1.

The architectural style of RUP No.1 compliments the buildings on the Science and Technology Quad while RUP No.2 compliments those on the Charlotte Research Institute Campus.
